Ponderings of our Spiritual Life Director April 2026

UULent HOPE

Remember in December when we energetically embraced our monthly theme of
Choosing Hope? Not just having some sort of thin, intangible hope but choosing
something tangible and active. We actually chose to have a real live yule goat come
visit us in our sanctuary the Sunday before Christmas! Was that what choosing hope
looks like? Well, there was so much joy in that moment that I’m pretty sure no one was
left feeling hopeless that day.
But hope fades, especially as tyrants persist.
The message, however, was to keep choosing hope over and over again. That is not
easy.
I’m pretty sure that I proclaimed loudly to Jenn last week that: “I am NOT choosing hope
right now!” It happens. It happens to me. It happens to you. It happens to all of us. And
that’s ok, because we’ll find it again. And more likely than not, we’ll find it together.
Maybe we found some together last Saturday at the No Kings rally? Maybe we found
some yesterday during Rev. Pat’s message?
I was reminded of a couple statements I’ve seen online, from scientists, as I listened to
her.

WE HAVE A CHOICE!

The good news is that Unitarian Universalism is in the “business” of spiritual and cultural
transformation. By simply being a part of this community, you are a part of that
transformation. Choosing to show up is choosing a tangible and active hope. And when
we do it with goats, Easter Bonnets, talent shows, and karaoke, well we’ve just upped
our level of joy and turned hope into shared love and laughter. Does that transform your
spirit?
