Celebrating the Blessing of a Community that Shows Up!
LGBTQIA+ folx and allies were asked to show up at the school board meeting to support our children and youth and the reading of the Pride Proclamation, and we filled up the room!
What a difference this makes for those who choose to speak in support of the proclamation and for the youth who voiced their concerns about the Florida House Bill HB 1557 (the “don’t say gay” bill). Suicide and attempted suicide rates among teens LGBTQIA+ teens are estimated to be about 5-10% of that population. We need to show up and let them know they are loved and supported.
Only one person spoke out against the LGBTQIA+ community during the allowed community comments time. Sadly, this person’s theology is severely limited by a heterosexist and unscientific world view which leads them to make harmful remarks. When we show up, when many of us show up, we let people know that there is a more loving and life-sustaining truth to be found! Let’s keep celebrating that, letting our joyfulness become a transforming force for the community.
