Ponderings of our Spiritual Life Director

The #UULent word for Monday, day 20 of Lent, was “change”. For me, it was also day 1 of trying to self-quarantine as much as possible.

Change. Sudden change. Sudden change for how we go about living our daily lives. Sudden change for the health and wellbeing of all.

I’ve heard from many of you about how surreal this is, about how unsettling and confusing it is, and even about being bored. Whatever it is you’re feeling, and perhaps it’s several things at once and/or is ever changing, just keep on feeling it. It’s real. And we’re all in this together. Name the feelings, be with them, and keep on moving forward with them. I urge you during this time to meditate, reflect, journal, create, whatever your personal spiritual practice is- do it often. If you need help developing a spiritual practice, I’m here to help you. Contact me at [email protected].

The news is changing rapidly, and as it does, we have to adjust and adapt. And although we are adjusting our behaviors rapidly, the time it takes for our minds to process all of this is much greater. It’s important that we have each other and I am so grateful for social media and platforms, like Zoom, that allow for us to connect. Let’s use them to keep ourselves and our community strong and to process this together! We can do this for Wednesday night events, we can do this on Sunday, and we can do this for other small groups and one on one sessions. I am still learning the Zoom technology and trying to get information to all of you as best I can. But, I am open to ideas for how you want to use this so we can be together. Please reach out to me and share what you are thinking about!

We have no choice but to change right now- from mundane, small things, to the daily routines that normally drive our lives, to how we nurture our souls and heal each other. These times are suddenly demanding of us creative new ways to live and be together, to open ourselves up to the Spirit of Life in ways we never imagined we’d have to imagine. Together, we can hold on to the hope of awakening to a new reality, and to increasing the ways in which we love one another and the Earth.
