Sunday, April 3, we will discuss the book Elite: Uncovering Classism in Unitarian Universalist History by Mark Harris. Classism is a big topic for discussion in our denomination, as well as in our country, right now. The UUA Commission on Appraisal is currently studying this topic for a report due next year to our General Assembly. (Rev. Lynne was on the Commission when it began its work on classism.)
We often assume many things about our visitors and members, including that they are well-educated and they are not poor. While this is not at all true, the assumption can often serve to make itself a reality. We need to develop a new perspective in our congregations where we revise our many preconceived notions about who would “fit” us and who wouldn’t. This book can become part of a larger conversation.
