“Phenomenon” is a 1996 American romantic fantasy starring John Travolta, Kyra Sedgwick, Forest Whitaker, and Robert Duvall.  Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of “A-“.

In it, an amiable small-town everyman experiences a mysterious light, he suddenly develops an unusual capacity to understand the world around him. His journey challenges his community to reconsider what it means to be human, to love, and to face the mysteries of life.

According to screenwriter Gerald Di Pego, Zen philosophy influenced the writing. There’s also influence from Scientology, of which actor John Travolta is a member.
